Bankhead Coal Mine

 

One practice in the mines was for each man to have a metal tag, sort of like a dog tag.  The miner would take his take off the board and carry it into the mine.  At the end of the shift, he would return the tag to the board, so that foremen would know that each man had returned from the shift.
