L & N Station

This grade separation required that the L & N terminal be rebuilt so that the platforms were at the level of the new tracks and could be accessed by stairs (no Americans with Disabilities Act) from the level of Morris Avenue.  This facility serves as the Amtrak terminal today, located between 18th and 19th Streets, next to a corn syrup unloading terminal served by the tank cars shown in the photo.

In the last photo, one sees the L & N passenger platforms viewed from the 21st Street Viaduct, looking west.  The building at the left with the smokestack is the old Birmingham Electric Company powerhouse.  The passenger platforms extend from 20th Street, over 19th, and past 18th Street, as seen in the photo, behind the corn syrup tank car.
