The two tunnels discussed in the Alabama story relating to
John Henry are shown in the 1959 USGS image at the right. They are
labeled as "Oak Mountain" and "Coosa" tunnels.
These are located in northern Shelby County, Alabama, southeast
of the town of Leeds. Leeds, in turn, is located along I-20 east
of Birmingham in northeastern Jefferson County. The county line in
this area has shifted over the years, and Oak Mtn. tunnel has shifted
counties!
The map below is from the UA Map Archive, and is an 1889 Central of
Georgia Railway map. The tunnels are located near the towns of
Leeds and Dunnavant.
