Legend of John Henry

The two tunnels discussed in the Alabama story relating to John Henry are shown in the 1959 USGS image at the right.  They are labeled as "Oak Mountain" and "Coosa" tunnels.  These are located in northern Shelby County, Alabama, southeast of the town of Leeds.  Leeds, in turn, is located along I-20 east of Birmingham in northeastern Jefferson County.  The county line in this area has shifted over the years, and Oak Mtn. tunnel has shifted counties!

The map below is from the UA Map Archive, and is an 1889 Central of Georgia Railway map.  The tunnels are located near the towns of Leeds and Dunnavant.
