The
top photo is entitled "Coal mine at Lewisburg, Alabama.
Some of the settlers on homesteads work here." It
was taken in February, 1937, by Rothstein, for the FSA/OWI.
This
1937 (top) photo was a riddle, until I received an email from a
"e-friend" in Fultondale, AL. She said there was a large
picture in the Library there that I should see. The library staff
was very helpful, and now you see it here (bottom image), courtesy of
the Library and modern technology.
There
was also a local history booklet that I read quickly and hope to devote
some more time to soon.
I
think that I have learned that there was a Mary Lee Mine that closed due
to flooding about 1913. There was a Lewisburg No. 1 mine that
closed about 1919, after WWI ended. And there was a Lewisburg No.
2 mine, located between Lewisburg and today's Fultondale which operated
until the 1940's or 50's. It is shown at left.
See
the previous second aerial photo for another view of this site.
Tailings pile was noted by some to be the "tallest manmade mountain
in the world." It was later removed. |
