Newcastle Coal MinesNew Castle Coal CompanyWhatever the evolution, by about 1925, the New Castle Coal Company was listed in the City Directory of Birmingham with offices located at 1918-1920 American Trust Building. Officers of the company were Carr McCormack, President; Andrew Ramsey, V.P.; Hardy McCormack, V.P. & Treasurer.McCormack and Ramsey may sound familiar -- they should -- as they were second generation of men that built up the Tennessee Coal and Iron Company. Let's see what they were operating in the late 1920's. A very big thanks to Mr. Ted McCormack, grandson of Mr. Carr McCormack for many of the following images. He has assisted with information on the family business operations as well as a number of great photos, originally taken by Birmingham View and O.V. Hunt, noted Birmingham studio photographers. Getting photos from a member of the McCormack family really makes the history come alive. Thanks, Ted. This photo shows a Newcastle Coal Company train switching hoppers, possibly alongside Newcastle Road at Newcastle. Compare this image to another of this locomotive with a different tender, and without the paint job. |
