Newcastle Coal Mines

New Castle Coal Company

This image was provided by Ted McCormack's collection of  O.V. Hunt pictures.

These ovens were located in the hollow of Black Creek, at the No. 2 Plant site.  This is a classic coke oven operation, with hand drawn ovens, and a steam operated "dinkey" engine and a gravity operated "larry car" for loading the ovens with coal.  After coking was complete the laborers used hooked iron rods to pull the hot coke onto the ground, and then load it by hand into waiting rail cars on the next level.
