Pratt Coal MinesSlope Number 5The Pratt Mine Slopes were apparently opened along the edge of the Pratt Seam, and numbered in order from Slope No. 1, where the town of Pratt City grew. Slope No. 2 was located north, and then (for reasons unknown) the other three Slopes were located in a line to the southwest, following the line of the Pratt Seam.
Slope No. 5 was located in what became the town of Wylam, located between Ensley Works and Fairfield Works of TCI. The TCI railroad ran this way, and apparently the coal mines were the reason for the original location of the line, which later served Fairfield Works.
There are a series of maps at the Birmingham library which show changes to the plant at Slope No. 5 over the years. They show that coke ovens were added to this site, as well as a subsequent on site track to load coke. These maps are available online if you have a valid library card number.
