This
map shows the route of the Mineral Branch of the L&N as it ran along
Red Mountain above the City of Birmingham. At the Red Mountain Gap,
current site of the Vulcan Statue, the railroad crossed from the north
face to the south face of the mountain.
The
photo at the right shows the bridge abutment of the former railroad bridge
over 18th Street at the top of Red Mountain. The bridge abutment is
not the stone work at the top, but is a concrete structure covered in
vegetation.
This
view is taken looking northeast, standing below the Vulcan Statue at the
trailhead.
