This is the 18th
Street Underpass, (originally called a "subway" for street
vehicles) built as part of the grade separation project. The former
L&N Passenger Station platforms are visible by the tank cars. This
part of the 1930 era station became a corn syrup unloading facility in its
latter years -- the tank cars are Archer Daniels Midland cars. This view
is looking south toward Red Mountain, South Side and UAB. This
picture also shows how the street grade was lowered to achieve clearance
as the railroad was also raised. |
